Open the heart-marked door
You gently knock on the heart-marked door.

. . .

Kate snorts. "Seriously?" And then coughs.

You turn the knob and push the door open.


It's ... dark. There's a bed against the right wall, slightly out of line (like someone was moving in in a hurry and half-assed putting the bed there).

The room shares the same shitty carpeting as the hallway, but the air feels different. Less... oppressive, and not smelling like a damp cave. The wallpaper, though--

Kate peeks inside. "Whoa," she remarks, "is this your old room?"

"No," you reply bluntly. "I'm... not really sure what this room is. The wallpaper--those are the colors I was wearing my first night in the dungeon. ...I've never seen that bed before, though. It's not mine, it's not Lora's, it's... I don't know. I don't recognize the bed, or this room, at all."

"Spooky," Kate comments as she flutters on in, hovering her way toward the bed. "What if you sleep in this bed, and it takes you to another dungeon?"

You cautiously walk in after her, casually examining the walls. "I can't picture myself ever falling asleep in a place like this. ...Maybe if I'm in the bed when I fade out? That feels way, way too specific, though."

You approach the bed, which Kate is already laying in. "It's a pretty nice bed," she says. "A little too soft, but whatever." You stare at her for a moment, trying not to laugh at tiny Kate relaxing with her little doll hands tucked behind her head. She shrugs. "What? I'm keeping an eye on the ceiling. Could be dangerous, you don't know."

Also on the bed is a piece of paper; the writing, like the heart-shaped symbol, appears to be blood.





You check under the pillow: nothing.

You look under the bed: also nothing.

You don't see any switches, cabinets, panels, windows, vents, chests... nothing.

You're not real sure what to do with this room.

Possible a bad idea, but this seems a place to fade.

Other thoughts, my first post on this comic and may have (read probably have) been already thought of by others:

So, she needs to play the Shin Megami Tensei game before the next sleep over. Should let her get more use out of her partners.

And then she needs to get a hold of the Persona sub series, to better understand her partner's key differences and abilities.

It seems to me that the dream rings are what may give her more players in her dungeon.

A safe room, perhaps? Perhaps the heart is a note from a previous adventurer, marking this as a safe room. A castle might be a way of communicating "this is a safe place to hole up." It could also represent The Tower, one of the major arcana in tarot. I suspect, however, that it means that this room is a checkpoint or safe room (or perhaps *save* room) of some variety.

The 12 in a heart might represent a different deck, the 52-card deck of playing cards, where a 12 would represent the Queen-- so this note could be related to the Queen of Hearts. It's possible that other adventurers might have a different theme for the dungeon, instead of tarot, so perhaps the 52-card deck was the theme for a different adventurer.

As for what to *do*, I suggest getting on the bed and lying down-- even if we don't sleep, it might be a way to "save our game" and allow starting from THIS bed in future sessions. (Edit: uh yes do close the door first, though.)

Edit edit: If we do fade out here, it might be a good idea to wrap the "do not reset" tape around the Whole-Ass Sword when we do, and set it down in the room.

We wake up in a bed at the start of dungeontime normally, right? Maybe this is a checkpoint; interact with the bed somehow, come back next time here instead of resetting to the flooding cell. As for the 12 in the heart... 12 levels down? 12 lives left? Room #12 of this type? Hard to say.

I bet it is a save point of some type. The 12 is Plair's current HP. Closing the door and resting on the bed will give options. There might be a reset spawn bed, with or without choices, or maybe when rejoining another night there will be choices to which bed to spawn in, or not and spawn in last bed. Or there will be an option to wake or continue.

I think we need to nicely close the door, then sit on the bed.

Everything checks out. This is probably the Queen of Hearts' room. Or some melding of Plaire's dungeon with her room. I think this is a safe room.

Is there anything on the back of the note? We should write a reply, or just talk. Whoever left this might read it eventually.

We should close the door and lie in the bed, if only for a little. Both of us. And if we do fade out or die, this will be a good spot to do it. After that... I kind of want to see what happens before doing anything. Maybe try to meditate a bit if Kate's not still dying. If this room doesn't cure her we'll have to keep moving.

I don't think anyone has been here recently. Why leave a note in here when a note could have been left on the door?

This could be a health meter, or a "lives left," thing. Make sure we take it with us.

The drawing could also represent the house itself.

Maybe it's meant to be a home base of sorts? Like how in some video games you have a bedroom you can decorate? I mean, we did just put a plushie on the bed.

If we do close the door, have Kate make a flame so we're not in total darkness (but don't light anything ON fire).

Also as inviting as this room is (compared to the rest of the dungeon), beware of Grues.

If this is a checkpoint the tower drawing's a zone marker. That thought caused again by the Dead Sells. Also in French the main tower called "le donjon". None of that mean nothing though, don't mind me.
