Ask the bus about food

Ask the bus about food
You have a seat, and the bus begins taking you into the rest of town.

"Okay, so..." you breathe in, still uncertain about staring directly into one of the screens. "Food. Where can I get groceries at?"

"Well," the bus begins, "as part of a contractual agreement between the company and Chariot MT, I'm strongly encouraged to recommend MondolFoods. The majority of their food is artificially engineered or imported from overseas, ensuring consistency and minimal radiation.

There's also Maria's, a locally owned and operated grocer that's been in town for substantially longer. Their prices are lower on average, though there's been some debate about the taste."

You nod. You're... pretty sure the bus can see that, and knows what it means.

"Okay. T... Thanks." You pause, the information needing to sink in before another thought occurs to you. "What about games? Like... video games."

"Mondol-Funstop sells video games, movies, and other entertainment. On the opposite side of town is a store named The Back Room; the only information I can find online is that they are, and I quote, "the island of misfit toys." But, I have heard passengers mention that The Back Room sells games."

"Thanks," you reply again--still awkwardly, but not as forced sounding this time. You ride the bus in silence for a little while, getting it all straight in your head before another thought interrupts it. "Do... you have a name? Is that rude to ask?"

"No," the bus replies simply, before adding "to either question. Each of my buses has a code, and I collectively have a network number as part of my AI system, but Chariot MT did not assign me a name."

"Huh," is all you can manage in the moment. On a whim, you follow up with an otherwise random question. "Have you heard of Biggest Shrug?"

"A few members of the band take the bus sometimes," says the bus. "I've not been able to hear them play yet, but they seem popular with teens and young adults."

Let's hit up Maria's first, I doubt we make that much off of videos, so cheap is probobly a good call.

+1 then maybe check out the back room don't know why but that feels like its going to be an important place later?

+1 to both, The Back Room sounds tangentially occult in a toy story way.

+1 to both of these!

Let's go to the grocer's. Not so much for the price but rather because you're more likely to have a casual conversation with folks there, so we might be able to get to know some more locals. It'll also be supporting a local business, which needs all the support it can get when there's supermarket competition nearby.

>lets go to the backrooms! or The Back Room
>but groceries first

Maria's seems like a nice place to visit, especially considering our somewhat limited funds. It's awfully nice of the AI to inform us of the paid sponsorship, is that also part of the agreement? Most places would avoid mentioning that if they could get away with it.

I'm guessing this AI is smarter than it's owners know, and it wasn't told to not tell people about the sponsorship.

I want to check out The Back Room.

If we want to do game shopping, we should do that *before* we do grocery shopping, so we can take any frozen food we buy straight home instead of having to tote it around.

I'm intrigued by this Back Room place. We could try going there first, and then check out the other game store afterwards. Then we can decide which grocery store to try, or go scout out both of them.

Let's thank the bus again and ask if it (she? what pronoun is appropriate for an AI bus with a female voice? I suppose we could ask) has any recommendations for places of interest in town that someone from out-of-town wouldn't necessarily know about. Also, is there a regular bus schedule, or do they only use the AI bus system here?

In regards to pronouns, 'they/their' could be a nice inclusive one.

I'm not entirely comfortable with The Back Room myself. The lack of information online for a "game" selling store feels sketchy, but add that in with the name itself indicates trouble.

"The Back Room" to me implies nefarious activities. The Back Room is where the illegal gambling (or "games") and drug operations occur in store fronts operated by gangs.

However if any of this speculation is true then this could be a place of plot significance later on in our story. So an early on recon of the area could be of benefit to us later.

Then again I could be wrong. And "The island of misfit toys" sounds quite interesting. So while I'm uneasy with this establishment as of now a visit could prove to be informative. We just should keep our guard up while there.

Edit: as for an actual suggestion if we have time for two stops lets go check out "The Back Room" first and then either food store after. We really need better eats. Our adventures will be cut disappointingly short if we die to scurvy before the nightmare horrors.

A backroom to one can be a saferoom to another. Could be that some people that aren't fans of how society is run currently might be hanging out there. I'm probably stretching it though, although if i'm not, it sounds dope to me.

Ask The Bus more questions.
Where's clinic.
Recommendations on tech shops.

Hmm...
Consider asking the AI if she remembers any advertisement, commercial or other public broadcast using the slogan "I have a right to know."

Look into a job (ideally part-time but it's good to know our options just in general). Having just moved and having very little money, it'd be nice to be able to build up a cash reserve in case of emergencies (or in case we need to be able to get emergency money).

Ask the bus if it can share its network number, and attempt to derive a name from that.

If it cannot share this info, perhaps name it based on certain attributes it has, like 'Blue' or 'Cyan', or maybe 'Wheels'. It may be handy if we have to interact frequently with the bus in future.

On a more serious note, I recommend Maria's as the first stop. Both for the necessity of food and for the increased likelihood of gaining info via informal small-talk.

MondolFoods, Mondol-Funstop…
I'm guessing this 'Mondol' is a umbrella corporation.
