Switching your phone off and putting it back in your pocket, you turn to Cici.

"Think you can scout ahead...?"

"Hell yeah I can!," Cici exclaims.

She puts the toolbox down and flutters off down the stairs, floating above the rushing water. Her single eye seems to shine brighter as Cici enters the darkness; it makes you smile a little. She's gotten a pretty good hang of flying already, though to be fair she seems to have less... mobility? Than Kate? Cici's flight is steadier, but slower, and you can't picture Cici swooping around and rolling like Kate can.

Cici, for her small size, looks sturdy. Even when she's drifting through the air, you feel like kicking her would fuck your foot up.

You can still hear her, farther and farther into the tunnel. "Scout the HELL outta this tunnel! ... Scout its face off."

You head down the stairs yourself, poking your broom handle polearm into the water. It feels... less goopy than the sludge that filled your starting room. More fluid. Still gross. That probably means this tunnel won't just take you back to the beginning--it likely leads somewhere else.

Also, the polearm goes deep.

You're pretty sure the water would reach at least your abdomen if you went down to the floor. As fast as it's going, the current would definitely sweep you away. There's still quite a bit of clearance from the roof, though--

you shake your head at the thought.

It's very silly


a lot of old sidescrolling games, in an effort to both add variety to the gameplay AND to showcase how fast the console could go, would have little racing segments where you had to dodge obstacles and fight bad guys while soaring across the screen. A lot of different games had them--sequences on hoverbikes, or in mine carts, or in little airplanes, or whatever.

But more specifically, you have surfed through a sewer in at least two different beat 'em ups.

The difference between making a pixelated turtle surf, and actually, physically surfing, is vast.

You know this.

Even with whatever janky physics your dream dungeon has, you are not capable of surfing through a flooded maintenance tunnel.

This is fact.

You have an ominous countdown literally written in blood. You cannot afford to get yourself killed and lose an entire night trying an incredibly stupid stunt.

And that's fine

...But at the same time--

"Plaire!," Cici yells on her way back. "It curves after a while, but it just keeps going! This is a long dang tunnel!"

"Talk me out of trying to surf this tunnel," you insist.

"What?" Cici stops where the dry part of the stairs begins. "Why would I do that?! That would be AWESOME!"

"Dammit Cici," you laugh, "one of us has to be the responsible one."

"Screw that!," she counters, "we can't die! You can't do this in real life, Plaire, kick its ass. Wait, no!" She pauses, like the realization is still coming through. "This'd take us away from the boss, wouldn't it? We got a plan, we should definitely stick to it."

You nod, and she nods. You both nod.

...Before she adds, "It would be really cool, though!"

"It would be the fucking coolest."

"What would you even surf on?," she asks.

"I don't know!," you reply with a shrug and another hidden smile, "I have NO idea."

Maybe knock a door off it's hinges for a 'surfboard'?
Though probobly best focusing on the boss.

For that matter, a surfboard-like object might be one of the rewards for beating Father Warden. For all we know, the dream might operate on Metroidvania rules.

oh you know use part of the pews. surely some of the wood will be long enough for a surf board. hell we could likely lay on it to better keep our balance

Either that or bring a screwdriver next time we're dreaming. Still, it'd be a good idea to put a pin in using a door to ride the current (I would suggest using it like a gondola and steer with the polearm) until after we've tried the boss fight.

We brought a screwdriver with us this time. It's in the toolbox. Can't say if a modern screwdriver would fit medieval screws, though.

On the other hand, a modern key fits in dungeon keyholes.

It would be absolutely hilarious if we unscrewed one door and then the screwdriver just erased itself.

Screwdriver: "I did my job, I'm clocking out. See you tomorrow, bitches."

We do in fact have a screwdriver in the toolbox that could be used to unscrew a door from its hinges. However, I vote we try to float along the river in an emptied-out barrel from the other room. Plaire would be less exposed to outside threats inside a barrel, could duck down inside it and maybe even seal herself off using a lid.

It is probably for the best we don't try to surf the tunnel, those sections are full of pitfalls and cheap deaths and are usually the #1 best way to run down your extra lives counter in a hurry.

Time to go back and deal with the boss. Oh, and before that see if we picked up any powers from playing that arcade cabinet earlier.

+1. Who knows what Plaire would get from Drillga; the corridors and doors are probably unbreakable objects, but maybe there are environmental blockages that can be drilled through elsewhere in the dungeon. Or maybe it grants +5 effectiveness to piercing attacks, or Weapon Proficiency: Piercing? Have Plaire practice thrusting attacks with the polearm as well as slashing.

+1 to taking on the boss first, the lower chains got covered pretty quick and having a partner is definitely preferable to going solo.

-1 to facing the wall-boss tonight, we should have gotten ourselves Crush Souls dodge-roll powers if we wanted to do that. Better to do the tunnel challenge using a door as a surf board and see what kind of prize we get for completing that.

Edit: Or better yet, float along the river in an emptied barrel.

I still want to see what's in the barrels (we don't have any barrel-related traumas, do we?)

We might be able to cheese the boss by having Cici shoot her lasers into the ceiling where Father comes from.

If we start the fight, have Plaire and Cici aim for the joints at the same time, then fall back.

I don't think cheesing would work here. The only spot to shoot at the boss would be from directly below his entry point, and if he auto-drops upon being engaged, there's a good chance that Plaire would be squished into goo.

Yeah, I doubt we'll be able to cheese the boss fight, we've already figured out that its weakness are the fleshy parts attaching its mask to the chains. I don't think there's any reason to think there's any other way to defeat it.

+1 to finding out what's in the barrels before doing anything else, though.

Ohhhh no. I just had a thought. The water is flowing away from the stairs and down the corridor, right? This sounds like not just a side-scroller surfing level, but an _obstacle_ level. What are the odds that the corridor is going to be filled with outcroppings and grates and stuff? I mean, doesn't sound like Cici spotted anything, but...

Anyway, unless Plaire rolls a bunch of barrels down into the flow, or climbs into a barrel herself and floats downstream, there's not much chance of anything happening this time. Maybe next time she can bring an inflatable dinghy into the dream or something. Probably not a lot of surfboards in Ninelives. A life preserver is an option, but there's probably piranha facehuggers in the water or something.

NOT that I'm suggesting to go through with this BUT: Can Cici carry Plaire in this form? Based on what she said it'd be a huge time-sink and there's no telling if her endurance would giveaway at some point even if she can. But an option to consider in the future.

Player: Explore the Poison Gas Hallway.

The cells in the cell block downstairs haven't been scouted. You can easily avoid the pressure panel you know about, although that doesn't preclude the existence of more.

Still, every trap panel you find is one fewer trap panel you have left to find. That's one step closer to making the room safe to you.

Be ready to gulp one last lungful of air and bolt for the stairs at any time.

The floor's Right-To-Knows might be triggered by your presence. Explore efficiently, but keep quiet. The first dream, you crept around cautiously, and they didn't appear for a while. But the second and third dreams, you engaged in combat and conversation, respectively, right out in the open, and they appeared much sooner.

Weeelllll... Hopefully it was the noise that alerted them. A worse case would be that their spawn rate (or something?) and AI progresses every night, to keep the pressure on you so you don't get complacent. It's kind of an asshole game mechanic, since you have to work for progress, and these brain-fuckers get free upgrades just to challenge you, but you've seen a few asshole mechanics already.

Anyway, keep quiet in infested areas. Hopefully, that will afford you enough time to scope out the cells safely. If you see or hear one, get the hell out. They might be able to trigger the trap panels (through AI stupidity or malevolence), and you most definitely do not want combat inside of poison gas.

you have a tool box. remove the door from the hinges. if you need to get a second door, screw them together and you now have a sewer raft. might have duct tape or screws in the toolbox

+1, we do have a screwdriver in the toolbox. It might be better to try floating along in a barrel, though? But use the screwdriver to unscrew a door if that's our final decision.

This may or may not be a bust. We need to check the barrel room. What we may or may not find in the barrel room seems like it will affect our decision here.

Jumping in seems a poor choice. Anyways, did we have swim lessons growing up?
