Unlock the door near the stairs

Unlock the door near the stairs
Once Cici has recovered, you head to the locked door near the stairs.

"There should be some old keys in the toolbox," you tell Cici.

She spends a moment trying to get the toolbox open with her... uh... talons, before you eventually help her get it open. You take one of the keys you picked up at the junkyard, and try it on the locked door.

. . .

It does not unlock.

"Damn," you mutter under your helmet. "I was really hoping that would work."

You toss the key back into the toolbox, and Cici shuts it.

You take the house key from your pocket and try it on the locked door.

. . .

Ta-da. It opens.

"So it HAS to be my house key," you conclude.

"Would a copy work?," Cici asks. "You know like, getting another house key made!"

"Maybe," you reply. It's clearly something to do with the symbolism of it being your house key in your dungeon, but you feel like if just any key won't work then just getting duplicate keys made also sounds too easy.

Who knows, though? Maybe this whole system was designed before you could get keys copied for a couple of bucks.

You push the door open; behind it is a staircase, leading down into a dark... maintenance tunnel?

The tunnel is flooded, the water rushing forward and into the dark at a very intimidating speed. You're not sure how deep the water goes, or where the tunnel leads off to. The stairs here don't go down as far as the stairs between floors did... which means the tunnel is, itself, basically wedged between B1 and the first floor.

You watch the sewagey sludge carry on for a while before remembering you have a cell phone now, and you have no idea how that works in the dream.

You take out your phone.

You press the little button to wake it up, and--

you are greeted with... white.

A bright and not completely consistent white stares out of your phone. It shifts and flows, like snow or... paint. The screen puts off a soft hum, not quite like TV static. Sometimes it sounds like the noise is trying to say something, but you can never really make out any words. Sometimes you see shapes in the changing light of the screen, but they too never quite coalesce into anything tangible.

You try tapping and dragging your fingertip across the screen, but alas, the phone does not respond. It seems like the Weird Snow app is the only thing your phone does in here.

"...Huh," you comment. "Well that sucks."

Send Cici to do some scouting down the maintenance tunnel, she can fly above the dangerous rushing water. Then go to the room with the barrels and try to pry one open with the polearm.

I agree with sending Cici to scout, but we should stay at the top of the stairwell while she does-- don't split the party and all that, especially when there are bone monsters that can slip through the walls.

Also have we considered the fact that PLaires Cici copied power could be an actual spear that we could wield? Kinda like Undine from Undertale.

+1 to sending Cici to scout. In addition, unequip the toolbox. She can't even open it, so it's dead weight to her in that space.

If Bird!Cici can see in the dark, or her light spears generate enough light to navigate by, that's good. Otherwise, equip a torch (assuming she can hold it so it won't burn her wings).

Welp. Turn it off probobly? And lets explore the maintenance tunnel a bit, after making sure the door wouldn't lock/close behind you.

Darn, was really hoping the free keys would work but alas.

Re: keys, I'm curious what would happen if we made a copy for Cici and a copy for Kate. It's good for your trusted friends to have a house key, after all, in case of an emergency.

Sending Cici to scout down the tunnel a bit is probably a smart play, since she can fly. We can hand her a torch so she can see, if it's dark.

Yeah, and who knows? Kate and Cici might need emergency access to Plaire's house at some point. Of course, the wrong people might be able to get their hands on one of those keys too...

Being The Sun, she can probably light herself up.

Ask Cici why she doesn't just get a new eye printed.

Is the screen bright enough to use as a flashlight?

We should have left our phone number on the note.

Put the phone away.

Player: Test the waters.

Water, in this dungeon, is apparently more like sludge. But check its color, transparency, and viscosity; if this is noticeably different than what was pouring into your starting room, then this water must go elsewhere.

Second, depth check this stuff with your polearm. If it's knee deep, it's pretty much safe, but if you can't feel the floor, best assume it's death without a buoyancy aid.

Player may, perhaps, be able to swim, but for how long, while equipped with weapon and armor?

I'm going to laugh if this is just pouring into the starting room.

Yes, test. I question knee deep as maybe too deep.

Long shot, but maybe try upping the volume as far as it'll go on the cell phone? Another thing to maybe try one night is to bring a digital audio recorder into the dream, to see if recordings can pass through from the dream to the waking world. If it works, it may allow us to record the maybe-speech from the snow app and see if there's anything there. Since time logic doesn't really follow the same rules when you're asleep, maybe that's why we can't understand it.

Makes sense the phone doesn't work - not like we dreamed a cell tower in here too.

As for the keys... maybe they have to be keys with some significance to us? Old junk keys aren't special. Maybe we could take a friend's key in with us? Did we keep our parents' house key?
11th Jun 2020, 11:33 AM
I dont know why but I want to touch things with the snow app phone. Specifically touch it to the water 0.0 not sure why yet

If this is the water flowing into the original start room, it might be a fast (but unpleasant) way to get there from the spawn point and let us bypass everything in the way. Let's look at the map and try to figure out how close it is.

Using this as a shortcut to the start room strikes me as a bad idea, since the door is locked every night. Just the travel delay (if Player rushed in as soon as the nightmare started) might mean the water's up to the bars before she gets there.

And it's only a shortcut downward if we can cross the Big Hole and Locked Door in the north passage. Otherwise, it's an unpleasant trip to get to a location effectively farther from the next set of down stairs.

And here's the map: ( http://mda.thecomicseries.com/files/map_basement_1.png ).

Pop a brainsate to see what happens.

-1 pop a brainsate later, right before the fight with Father Warden so it does not wear off.

+1 if what i said is what you meant.

We should also worry if the brainsate is a healing item. In that case Plaire should take it during the Father Warden fight after being hurt.

I'm wondering what kind of effects mind-altering drugs will have in the dream-dungeon, which is a reflection of Plaire's psyche. I mean, a brainsate would make it more difficult for her to get in touch with certain emotions, so would it cause certain parts of the dream to phase out of existence or something?
